Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Areas and Hotels (2026)

Where to Stay in Bangkok: Best Areas and Hotels (2026)

Thailand’s fame isn’t only about temples, food, and beaches — Thai hospitality has a reputation all its own, and it’s part of what makes staying almost anywhere in this city a good experience. Add in how affordable five-star comfort is here compared to most capital cities, and the harder question in Bangkok usually isn’t whether you can afford a great hotel, but which neighbourhood to put it in.

Bangkok doesn’t hand you one obvious neighbourhood the way some cities do — it’s too big, and too spread out along the BTS and MRT lines, for that. Where you should stay comes down to what you’re prioritising: nightlife and shopping, a quiet five-star base away from the crowds, a slower pace by the river, or somewhere that simply gets you close to a Skytrain station on a budget.

This guide maps every major Bangkok neighbourhood worth considering, with hand-picked hotels at each price tier and the practical context you actually need. If you already know you want a ranked list of the city’s best hotels by category, read my companion guide to the best hotels in Bangkok instead.

Sukhumvit

The backbone of the city for visitors, running from Nana all the way out past Phra Khanong, so “Sukhumvit” can mean anything from bar-lined Soi 11 to the quieter residential stretch near Soi 24.

Ratchathewi and Pratunam

Central, close to Siam and the big shopping malls, and usually a notch cheaper than equivalent Sukhumvit hotels.

Wireless Road, Lumpini, Sathorn and Ratchadamri

Bangkok’s business district by day, and where a lot of the city’s quieter, more established five-star hotels are clustered around Lumpini Park.

Silom

Business district by day, one of the livelier nightlife strips after dark, and home to a few of Bangkok’s newest design hotels.

The Riverside and Old City (Rattanakosin/Chinatown)

Slower, greener, and built around the Chao Phraya and the temples rather than the BTS. This is where Bangkok’s grandest riverside hotels and its most atmospheric heritage stays are concentrated.

Ari

A quieter, café-filled residential pocket north of Siam — not the obvious pick, but a good one if you’ve done Bangkok before and want a break from the main tourist circuit.

SALA Rattanakosin facing Wat Arun, Shanghai Mansion in Chinatown, or The Mustang Blu in a converted 19th-century bank.

Best Hotel Breakfasts in Bangkok

  • The Peninsula Bangkok (Riverside) — the River Café & Terrace buffet is repeatedly singled out across independent reviews as one of the best hotel breakfasts in the city, with genuine variety across Asian and Western dishes and a dedicated egg station.
  • Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok (Riverside) — The Verandah’s breakfast has its own dedicated fanbase; one Tripadvisor review is literally titled “Best breakfast in Bangkok.”
  • Shangri-La Bangkok (Riverside) — reviewers consistently describe the buffet as vast and “never-ending,” with a strong Asian and Western spread across both the main restaurant and the Horizon Club lounge.
  • JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok (Sukhumvit) — repeatedly and independently called “best breakfast buffet ever” across years of reviews, with live cooking stations for eggs and noodles.
  • The Athenee Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel (Wireless Road) — its Rain Tree Café is ranked among the top 15 restaurants in Bangkok on Tripadvisor out of nearly 9,000, with a genuinely extensive daily breakfast spread, not just a weekend brunch.
  • Asia Hotel Bangkok (Ratchathewi) — the budget-tier standout. Reviews consistently flag the breakfast buffet as punching well above what you’d expect at this price point.

FAQ

Where should I stay in Bangkok for my first visit?

Sukhumvit or Ratchathewi, both directly on the BTS line. Sukhumvit gets you closer to nightlife and malls like Terminal 21; Ratchathewi is a notch cheaper and one stop from Siam.

Is Sukhumvit or the Riverside better for tourists?

Sukhumvit is more convenient for the BTS, restaurants, and nightlife. The Riverside is calmer and more scenic, and it’s also where Bangkok’s grandest hotels are concentrated, but you’ll lean on hotel shuttles and river boats more than on walking to a Skytrain station.

Are there good budget options in Bangkok?

Yes — Tarawish Hotel, Bangkok City Hotel, and Anya Nana @ Sukhumvit are all solid budget picks close to a BTS line. Lub d Bangkok Siam and The Yard Hostel are near the BTS; NapPark Hostel, Mad Monkey Hostel Bangkok, and Here Hostel put you in the classic Khao San Road backpacker scene instead.

Is there a good option away from the nightlife?

Around Lumpini Park, hotels like the Sukhothai, Sindhorn Kempinski, Waldorf Astoria, and Kimpton Maa-Lai offer a genuinely quiet five-star alternative to Sukhumvit or Silom, while Grand Mercure Bangkok Atrium and Valia Bangkok Sukhumvit 24 do the same at a lower price point.

Where should I stay for a heritage or boutique experience?

Chakrabongse Villas and SALA Rattanakosin both face Wat Arun from the Old City side of the river, while Shanghai Mansion, The Mustang Blu, Baan 2459, Loy La Long, and Bangkok Publishing Residence each occupy genuinely historic buildings in Chinatown and Phra Nakhon.

What’s a good option for families who want a resort feel?

Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort is the closest thing to an actual resort within the city, with 11 acres of gardens, a kids’ club, and a free shuttle boat. Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok is a good mid-range alternative with large family suites.

What happened to President Park Bangkok?

It was renovated and renamed Valia Bangkok Sukhumvit 24 under Kingston Hotel Group in November 2022. Same building, same Sukhumvit Soi 24 address.

Is the new Dusit Thani Bangkok the same building as before?

No — the original 1970 hotel was demolished in 2019 and rebuilt from scratch, reopening September 2024 with 257 rooms, all facing Lumpini Park.

Final thoughts

Bangkok rewards picking a base that matches the actual shape of your trip rather than whichever name you’ve already heard of. Sukhumvit Soi 11 or Nana if you want to be in the middle of the noise; Soi 24 if you want the same BTS access with a calmer walk home; Ratchathewi if Siam and the malls matter more to you than Sukhumvit’s nightlife; Lumpini Park if you want five-star quiet without a riverside price tag; the river if you’d rather trade a bit of convenience for a proper view. For a full two-day itinerary once you’ve picked a base, here’s my 2 Days in Bangkok guide.

Done with Bangkok? Head south to Krabi. My guide to day trips from Ao Nang covers everything you need. Or compare it against island time on Koh Lanta or Koh Kood.
