Cruising on Norwegian Aqua? We spent 7 nights in The Haven on this Prima Plus Class ship, and in this NCL Aqua review, I’m sharing what stood out, what didn’t, and whether The Haven was worth it.
I’ve been a fan of The Haven since we won a bid to upgrade on our first Norwegian cruise years ago, but it’s not always possible to sail with that level of premium service. When I booked this Prima Class ship from New York City to Bermuda, I knew I wanted to experience The Haven and see how it compared to the Haven experience we’ve had on other Norwegian ships.
Not long after booking, extended family decided to come along. There were eight of us total, including kids, with three Haven suites next to one another. For one family, it was their first time in The Haven, and for another, their first cruise altogether. So yes, we may have permanently raised their cruising standards to an unreasonable level (sorry, not sorry).
What started as a family vacation also became a memorial trip for my in-laws, during which we said goodbye at an ash-scattering service at sea that NCL handled with care.
In this review, I’m sharing what our Norwegian Aqua cruise was actually like, including our cabin, The Haven experience, dining, entertainment, and what we noticed around the rest of the ship.
About NCL Aqua
Before getting into the review, here are a few things worth knowing about Norwegian Aqua:
- Norwegian Aqua debuted in 2025, making it one of NCL’s newer ships.
- It is the first ship in NCL’s Prima Plus Class, an expanded version of the Prima Class ships.
- Norwegian Aqua carries 3,565 guests at double occupancy, which is fewer than NCL’s Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships, even though Aqua feels like one of Norwegian’s newer, feature-packed ships.
- Aqua has many of the features Norwegian has been adding to its newer ships, including Ocean Boulevard, Indulge Food Hall, Infinity Beach, Glow Court, and the Aqua Slidecoaster.
- Private elevator access is part of The Haven setup on Aqua, which stood out more than I expected once we were moving around the ship with a group.

Norwegian Aqua sails a mix of Bermuda, Bahamas, and Caribbean itineraries, depending on the time of year. Our cruise was a 7-night Bermuda sailing from New York City, but check NCL’s current schedule if you’re looking at a specific ship or itinerary, because cruise deployments can change.
Cruising on Norwegian Aqua in The Haven
The Haven Embarkation and First Day Onboard
We flew into New York City and stayed three nights before the cruise, which gave us time to enjoy the city before switching into cruise mode. Before our trip, NCL mailed us our Haven luggage tags, so we had them attached before heading to the port. On embarkation morning, we took an Uber to the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, dropped our bags with a porter, and headed inside to check in.
Haven guests had priority lines for security and check-in before being welcomed into a lounge area with snacks and coffee. The lounge itself was fine, but nothing special. I’ve seen photos of other Haven waiting areas that look much nicer, so this one was more “gets the job done” than “wow, vacation has begun.”
Lanie, our concierge for the week, came by to introduce herself and explain what to expect from her team and The Haven throughout the cruise. From there, we were escorted onto the ship, checked in for muster, and taken straight up to The Haven lounge. Embarkation was quick and smooth, which is one of those Haven perks I always appreciate.
Once we got to our suite, both our butler and stateroom attendant stopped by to introduce themselves and explain what they each handled. Our stateroom attendant took care of anything cabin-related, while our butler handled food-related requests.
We explored The Haven lounge and its outdoor area before heading into The Haven restaurant for lunch. The New York City skyline views were a great way to start the cruise, and the food was excellent.
The service felt a little off during that first lunch, but I also understand embarkation day is hectic, and we were a larger group of eight. I didn’t want to judge the whole Haven experience by one meal. As the week went on, though, we noticed that service at The Haven restaurant was inconsistent at times.
After lunch, the rest of our first day was spent settling into our suites, hanging out on The Haven deck, taking in those New York skyline views as we sailed away—including passing the Statue of Liberty and sailing under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge—and enjoying a few of Norwegian’s vacation cocktails. Not a bad way to leave Manhattan behind.
Our NCL Aqua Haven Penthouse Suite
We stayed in Haven Penthouse Suite 13240 on Deck 13, port side. Let me start by saying this was one of the nicest Haven cabins we’ve stayed in so far. It felt modern and clean, with a layout that made good use of the space. The bed was exactly what we love about The Haven: comfortable, soft but supportive, and the kind of bed you just don’t want to get out of in the morning.
The bathroom was also a highlight. It had a beautiful standing shower, and while I’m usually not a fan of rain showers, I actually loved this one. The balcony surprised me, too. It was bigger than I expected, especially since we did not pay extra for one of the large balcony categories. We had enough room to sit outside comfortably and enjoy some quiet time away from the rest of the ship.
Storage was better than it first appeared. There was hidden storage around the room that we were still finding near the end of the cruise. The only downside was the limited hanging space, which was noticeable once we unpacked.
A few quick things to know about this cabin:
- Cabin location: Deck 13, port side, close to the Haven elevators.
- Nearby cabins: Our suite was between a 2-bedroom family suite and another penthouse suite, both occupied by extended family members.
- Crew service doors: The cabin is across from crew service doors, but that did not make a difference during our stay.
- Noise: The cabin was quiet overall, but we could hear people in nearby cabins when they were loud.
- Coffee setup: A Nespresso machine is included and was kept stocked by our butler.
- Outlets and USB ports: From what I could confirm, the cabin had at least 6 standard U.S. outlets, 1 European outlet, 1 bathroom shaver outlet, 4 USB-A ports, and 4 USB-C ports, not including those used by fixed items like the TV or Nespresso machine.
The Haven Lounge and Bar
The Haven bar on Norwegian Aqua was beautiful and spacious, and it never felt overwhelmingly busy. Almost every time we walked in, we could smell a hint of smoke from their Smoked Manhattans, which I sadly never got around to trying. The cocktails and mocktails we ordered at The Haven Restaurant were always well-made and came from the bar.
The lounge itself was a quiet place to retreat from the rest of the ship. There was always seating available, and if we sat down, a server usually came by to take our order from the bar. We didn’t spend a ton of time sitting there, but after the ash-scattering service at sea, we found ourselves in the lounge sharing a few of my in-laws’ favorite drinks and toasting in their honor. It was exactly the kind of calm space we needed in that moment.
Every night, we stopped by the bar to grab a couple of bottles of water, which were included with our Free at Sea Plus Package at the time. The bartenders got to know us quickly and were always kind and ready to help. One night, one of them spotted my husband at the casino bar, where they had rotated for the evening, and came over to ask if he wanted anything. My husband is sober, so it was a small gesture, but a thoughtful one.
After chatting with him for a bit, we also learned that The Haven bar serves coffee, which we somehow had missed at first.
The Haven Restaurant
The Haven menu had recently been updated fleet-wide, so a few old favorites were missing, including the tuna tataki, shrimp cocktail, prime rib, and OMG cheesecake. I won’t pretend I wasn’t a little sad about that cheesecake. The new menu still follows the same Haven setup, though: breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus stay the same each day, so by the end of the week, you know exactly what your options are.
Breakfast was probably the easiest meal here. We could sit down, order coffee, and start the day without having to deal with the buffet or search for a table. Lunch was also convenient, especially on sea days when we wanted something that we could enjoy in a less chaotic setting than the rest of the ship.
Dinner was where the menu changes were most noticeable to us. The food was still good, but I missed some of the Haven staples we’ve enjoyed on other NCL ships. Service also varied depending on the night. Sometimes it was warm and attentive; other times, it felt like the team was stretched thin.
Still, this is where The Haven Restaurant really felt worth it for us, especially as a family of eight. We could sit down together throughout the week, avoid the buffet crowds, and have a quieter place for full meals.
The kids in our group also ordered from The Haven menu right along with us, which made the value even more apparent. When we thought about what it would cost to eat that way every night in New York or Los Angeles, it felt like we really got our money’s worth.
The Haven Pool Deck and Outdoor Spaces
All it took was one walk through the main pool deck to appreciate what we had back in The Haven. The outdoor Haven space on Norwegian Aqua spans Decks 16 and 17, and Deck 16 is where we spent most of our time since we were sailing with kids.
Deck 16 had the pool bar, outdoor dining, loungers, cabanas, steam sauna, ice room, and infinity pool. Not once did this area feel overwhelming, and we always found loungers available.
Deck 17 was the adults-only area, with more loungers, hot tubs, and a small smoking section. We didn’t spend much time up there, but it was nice to have that quieter adult space available.
The bartenders at the pool bar were always smiling and made some great drinks. Servers also made the rounds to see if anyone wanted anything.
We didn’t use the outdoor spaces as much as I would have liked because some days were windy and cooler than expected. But on one sea day toward the end of the cruise, I finally settled into a lounger with my book and fell asleep almost immediately, which felt like proof of a wonderful few days in Bermuda.
The only thing that surprised me was how small the hot tubs are upstairs. When we walked by and saw two people in one, it already looked tight, almost like there wasn’t enough room to stretch out comfortably. Compared to hot tubs we’ve seen on other ships, these seemed oddly shallow and compact.
The Haven Service
Service is one of the main reasons people book The Haven. You’re not just paying for a bigger cabin or quieter spaces. You’re also paying for the convenience of a concierge team, butler, stateroom attendant, priority assistance, and staff who can step in when something needs attention.
Pre-cruise concierge: Before boarding, we called the pre-cruise concierge to request specialty dining reservations for our group of eight. They couldn’t confirm them over the phone, but they submitted the request, and sure enough, the reservations were there once we boarded.
Butler service: Our butler was helpful, even though we only used him a few times for simple breakfast items. Our family next door used him on multiple mornings, ordering off-menu items like plates of vegetables and specific fruits, and he always came through with beautiful deliveries.
Stateroom attendant: Our stateroom attendant was just as wonderful. He was kind, personable, always smiling, and kept our room immaculate all week. He was also sweet with the kids in our group and gave them ducks on the last full day, which they loved.
Concierge help onboard: On our second night, we ran into an issue at Le Bistro when they wanted to split our group into separate tables. The situation was not handled kindly by the hostess or manager, so we went back upstairs to Lanie, our Haven concierge.
She was in the middle of the Captain’s cocktail party in The Haven Lounge, but she immediately stopped what she was doing, came downstairs, and helped fix the situation. She also assured us that we would not run into the same issue with our other reservations and said she would personally make sure of it.
True to her word, we didn’t have that problem again. From that point on, Lanie always made a point of saying hello, recommending things to us personally, and answering our questions whenever we stopped by the concierge desk. The concierge team also helped us take advantage of Haven perks already included in the experience, such as priority embarkation and disembarkation, escorted access on and off the ship, and reserved seating at the theater.
That moment at Le Bistro ended up being one of the more memorable parts of the trip, not because everything went perfectly, but because of how it was handled once things went sideways.
Dining Around Norwegian Aqua
Outside of The Haven Restaurant, we ate at three specialty dining restaurants and tried a few other spots around Norwegian Aqua. We never ate in the main dining room on this cruise because The Haven Restaurant felt like dining at a specialty restaurant every night, and we had no real reason to go elsewhere. The only thing we wished for was the ability to occasionally order a few items from the main dining room menu, like a different dessert, but that wasn’t possible unless we went through our butler.
Since this review is mostly focused on The Haven, I’m keeping this section tight and sharing the dining experiences that stood out most.
Le Bistro ($)
Le Bistro remains our favorite NCL specialty restaurant. We had a rough start when we arrived, but our waiter and the food made up for it. Everything we ordered was just as good as what we’ve had at Le Bistro on other Norwegian ships.
I usually stick to my favorites here: escargot, coq au vin, and île flottante. On this sailing, someone else ordered the lobster Thermidor, which came with an upcharge, and I had a bite. It was excellent. We also tried the Fraisier dessert, which was beautifully presented and delicious.
The only thing missing was the atmosphere. Le Bistro is usually one of the prettiest specialty restaurants on NCL, with a more intimate feel and beautiful decor. On Norwegian Aqua, the space felt more open and casual than elegant, which surprised me. The food was still excellent, but the restaurant itself didn’t have the same elegance we’ve loved on other ships.
Hasuki ($)
Hasuki was a fun teppanyaki dinner, where the cooking is part of the entertainment, and the kids loved every minute of it. Honestly, we loved watching them enjoy it just as much as the meal itself.
There is a lot of food served here, and everything we had was delicious, especially if you’re the kind of person who believes garlic and butter are basically their own food group. This was also the first time a teppanyaki chef sang during dinner on a cruise ship. Maybe that’s always been part of it, and I blocked it out, but either way, it made the night even more fun.
Onda by Scarpetta ($)
Every time we eat at Onda, we’re surprised by two things: how much food is included in the cover charge and how good the Italian food is. We’re picky when it comes to Italian, so I don’t say that lightly.
With a group of eight, we ordered multiple pizzas, appetizers, shared pasta plates, and entrées, with favorites including the Macellaio pizza, mezzeluna pasta, pappardelle Bolognese, veal Milanese, and butterscotch budino for dessert.
We did have one seating issue at the start. They originally placed our group of eight at a table that felt better suited for six, and we were sitting shoulder to shoulder. When the manager came by to check on us, we mentioned it, and she quickly added another table so we could spread out comfortably. It was handled kindly and without making us feel like we were being difficult, which we appreciated.
The portions are generous, the food feels more elevated than typical cruise-ship Italian fare, and it’s one of NCL’s specialty restaurants where we leave feeling like we got our money’s worth.
Indulge Food Hall
Indulge Food Hall is a great concept and reminded me a little of Virgin Voyages’ The Galley, except that each table has its own tablet to order from different food stations. It also has a bit of a Food Republic feel, since you can order several small plates through the tablet and have everything brought to your table.
Most of what we ordered was good, and I liked being able to try a few different things without committing to one big meal. We especially enjoyed the roasted chicken legs and pulled pork sandwich.
The only part that felt clunky was ordering drinks. Food could be ordered directly from the tablet, but if we wanted drinks, we had to flag down a server to place the order. It wasn’t a huge issue, but for a concept built around ordering from a tablet, the drink process felt inconvenient.
The Local
We only visited The Local a couple of times, once as a group for dessert and another time when someone went for a snack and to watch the Knicks game.
On Norwegian Aqua, it’s split into two spaces: a bar area with tables, a large screen, and a more limited menu, and a separate restaurant that felt more like a basic dining room than the cozy pub-style space we’ve enjoyed on other NCL ships.
Food-wise, I was told the appetizers weren’t as good as they used to be. Dessert was fine, but I was especially looking forward to the carrot cake. It’s been changed and wasn’t as good as I remembered. Overall, while The Local is usually a nice sit-down alternative to the buffet or main dining room, this version missed that familiar, relaxed pub feel.
Surfside Café / The Buffet
Because Norwegian Aqua also has The Local and Indulge Food Hall, the buffet was smaller than what we’re used to on Breakaway Plus ships. When it was open, it was chaotic. There wasn’t much room to walk around and see what was available without getting caught in the flow of people grabbing food, looking for tables, or cutting through the space to reach the main pool deck.
We stopped by once for pizza, and it was not good. After that, we didn’t have much reason to keep going back, especially with The Haven Restaurant available to us. This became one of my least favorite layout choices on Aqua because the buffet felt less like a place to browse and more like an area you had to move through carefully.
Around the Ship and Entertainment
We didn’t try every show or activity on Norwegian Aqua, but we did make it to a few things around the ship.
Tribute to Prince: If you’re a Prince fan, you’ll probably enjoy the music. The show itself was okay, but it also made me miss the old NCL days when they had more Broadway-style productions onboard.
The Price Is Right: I had no interest in going, but the kids were excited, so we made an effort to attend. I’m glad we did because it ended up being really fun. Every adult in the audience had a chance to be picked to participate, and one of our family members was called. She came close but didn’t make it to the next round. The game felt a lot like the TV show, with real prizes that were bigger than I expected.
Aqua Slidecoaster: The kids loved it at first, then found it kind of underwhelming. I didn’t understand why until I went on it myself. It starts off fast but then slows down, and the ride itself isn’t very long. I’m glad I tried it once, but I didn’t feel like I needed to do it again.
One thing to know: the robotic arm gives you a pretty strong push at the start, and I felt it in my back. I’d lean forward a bit before the launch. As Haven guests, we also had access to a separate priority line, which let us skip ahead of the regular line on our sailing.
90s Pool Deck Party: This was fun. They played a lot of 90s hits, with the music videos showing on the big screen over the pool. We enjoyed this one a lot.
GLOW Party: This was also fun and felt more like a club-style event since it was held in the theater that transforms into a club. I usually prefer these parties outside because there’s more room to move around. They didn’t fold back some of the theater seats for this one, which made the space feel tighter than it needed to be. Still, it was a good time if you decide to go.
Knicks Playoff Games: I know some passengers appreciated that NCL seemed to pay attention to special events happening during the sailing. Since the Knicks were in the playoffs, they showed the games in the theater, on the main pool screen, and also on the big screen at The Local and around the ship, giving fans other places to congregate and watch.
How Norwegian Aqua Compared to Other NCL Ships We’ve Sailed
Norwegian Aqua left me with mixed feelings. There were several things we really loved, mainly in The Haven, but there were also parts of the ship that didn’t work as well for us.
⚓ The Haven areas were beautiful. The dedicated elevator access was a huge plus when traveling with a group. That said, because Aqua has a larger Haven footprint than some of the older Norwegian ships we’ve sailed, we did feel a difference in the level of personalized service at times, most noticeably in The Haven Restaurant. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t always feel as polished as the Haven service we’ve experienced on ships like Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Encore.
🧭 The public spaces looked nice, but the layout felt awkward. Aqua didn’t feel as loud as Norwegian Breakaway, which I appreciated, but some of the venues felt small. I was lost half the time trying to get around, and that doesn’t usually happen to me on an NCL cruise, not counting Norwegian Epic, which is its own story.
🎭 Some of the venues felt smaller than expected, including the Aqua Theater. For a brand-new ship and a theater that also doubles as a club, I expected more from that space. Instead, it felt like one of the smaller main theaters we’ve experienced on NCL, and it made certain shows and parties feel tighter than they needed to be.
🏊 The main pool deck was one of my least favorite public spaces. Even though we spent most of our pool time in The Haven, I still walked through and around the main pool deck plenty of times, including at night. Compared with the lower outdoor areas, it felt like an afterthought. One night, I was standing there with a family member and telling her how much I usually love the ambiance of a cruise ship pool deck after dark, but this one just felt flat.
✨ The decor leaned modern and polished, but something was missing. Some of the furniture and materials around the ship felt less elevated than I expected for a ship this new and of its class.
👀 Good to know: Aqua has an observation area open to all guests. It’s similar to the observation lounges found on select Breakaway Plus ships, giving guests a quieter indoor space with views, plus snacks, coffee, and tea throughout the day. We didn’t use it much because we had The Haven, but it’s worth knowing about if you’re sailing in a regular cabin or just want another quieter place to sit.
☕ Another spot I loved was the Starbucks area. I really liked the location of Starbucks on Norwegian Aqua, with the open seating tucked behind it. That ended up being one of my favorite places to sit outside of The Haven because it felt quieter, comfortable, and easy to stop by for coffee.
🌊 Outside of The Haven, Ocean Boulevard was where Aqua really stood out. Compared to The Waterfront on Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships, Ocean Boulevard felt like an upgrade. There was so much outdoor space, and even on a sea day, I noticed plenty of open seating as I walked around. The infinity pools were also a nice touch, since the main pool area felt so small.
🚢 I still really like the NCL product. It usually gives us the kind of cruise experience we’re looking for between Celebrity and Royal Caribbean, without going too far in either direction. But after sailing on Norwegian Aqua, I can say I’m not in love with the Prima and Prima Plus Class layout. Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships still feel more like home to us, and there is something about The Haven on those ships that feels more personal.
Is The Haven Worth It on Norwegian Aqua?
For our family, The Haven was absolutely worth it on Norwegian Aqua. Between the cabins, private spaces, dining, concierge help, and priority access when available, the cruise felt much easier, especially as a group of eight.
I also think The Haven made us enjoy Aqua more than we would have in a regular cabin. Some public areas felt crowded or awkwardly laid out, and we noticed main dining room lines that I don’t remember seeing as often on other NCL ships. Having The Haven Restaurant and quieter spaces to retreat to made a real difference.
That said, the value of The Haven depends on how you like to travel and on the cruise’s cost when you book. For us, it added comfort, convenience, and space, making this family trip feel special. For someone who spends most of their time around the ship, eats later, doesn’t mind a little waiting, or finds a great deal on a regular cabin, the value might feel different.
Would I book The Haven on Norwegian Aqua again? Yes, if the price and itinerary made sense. I still love The Haven product, and I’d sail Aqua or another Prima Class ship again under the right circumstances. But if I were choosing purely based on the ship and overall NCL experience, Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships still feel more like home to us, even when we’re not sailing in The Haven.
